Churchill’s Seasons

  • Winter in Churchill is magical. Temperatures often plunge below -30°C, creating an icy landscape and ideal conditions for spotting the aurora borealis, which frequently dances across the dark skies. The Hudson Bay freezes over, reducing condensation and increasing the odds for those hoping to witness the aurora borealis dance.

  • Churchill’s summer brings a burst of life and colour to the tundra. Wildflowers bloom, beluga whales fill the Churchill River, and temperatures rise to a comfortable range of 10–20°C. It’s the best time for kayaking, boat tours, and wildlife viewing, including birds, foxes, and even the occasional polar bear.

  • Autumn is polar bear season. As temperatures drop and sea ice begins to form, polar bears gather near the coast, waiting to head back onto the ice. Known as the polar Bear Capital of the World for a reason there is no better place to view wild polar ebars.

  • Spring arrives slowly in Churchill, with the snow melting gradually and wildlife beginning to stir. Though still chilly, days grow longer, and migratory birds start returning to the region. It's a quieter time, with fewer visitors, offering a serene atmosphere and a glimpse of the changing seasons.
